How?

How is The Mix-Tape being produced?

Artists of all ages are contributing selections of their own work or compositions inspired by another artist's arrangement. These have been recorded on camera, various computers and other portable audio devices. These contributions will be put together in "suites" - medleys of different songs with congruous themes or other relevance to each other. The work of different singers and instrumentalists will be put together, alongside and on top of other samples.

How is it being put together?

Using various digital audio sequencing, synthesizing, manipulation and arrangement software.

How can I contribute?

If you play an instrument, sing or rap - look through the "Tracklist" posts and look for songs you would want to cover, improvise on or embellish.

The Mix-Tape will also include some quotes from movies, books, speeches, interviews, conversations, lectures etc. If you have any suggestions of quotes you would like to contribute get them to me in spoken or written word. You can send me an email, arrange to record a selection, monologue, scene or quotation or send me a clip of the original.

How will it be distributed?

Everyone who contributes to The Mix-Tape will receive a free one accompanied by a leaflet. They will also be passed out at concerts in the spring and available for download via the blog.

Why?

Why is it called "The Mix-Tape"?

I wanted the design of the project to be like a Mix-Tape for a friend at it's most basic level. Beyond that it is for a group of friends, and for a generation and a planet. But beneath that all each song is put together in a mix for one person to listen to; to know that no matter where you are you've heard the songs that made me think of you.

Why are you pursuing this dream still?

For those who believed in us: as well as those who believe in us now; those who doubted; those who still do (who not that right?).

For the tiny little prayers to father time that were never answered, the dreams that never came true. For the fact that "memories will fade", and the fact that you can lose the most important part of yourself and find it again in someone that you never met but always knew. Because I was completely empty, and the emptiness was filled by the world of wonder, which is happening all around me and within me all of the time.

For all my friends.

For the things that you cannot understand, for the things you can't explain, for the truth that we can all feel.

For every community and institution whose pronounced influence I am proud to represent.

To work with amazing people and bring friends together.

As a testament.

To know the power of words, and the beauty of music. And the power they have had in my life:
for me to empathize with, to empower me, to help me grow, to help me know I wasn't alone, or to let me feel how alone I was in all it's beauty, cry to, make love to, drink to, smoke to. To remind me of the beauty that I see, that hope is as real as despair, and that the light at the end of the tunnel is as brilliant and warms the tunnel that leads to it is dark and cold and empty.

Why you?

Because I was raised with a love of capturing moments. My mother a photographer, my father a poet - all my life I have labored over the page and the screen, the canvas and the instrumental.

Because I have love for so many communities, and individuals, each one a fragment, an aspect of a bigger whole. For the postcards I didn't get to send when I was abroad. For the connections I never made when I was home. To let you see the sides of me that you have never seen, and The Family that you know so well.

Why now?

The Mix-Tape takes us through many seasons of change, but it is at it's heart, and it's conclusion, about spring. The season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renaissance, awakenings, and growth. The Mix-Tape takes us from the melancholy early spring, through the freedom of summer, the goodbyes, the brisk fall and freezing winter, all the way back through to another and yet another beautiful spring.

What?

The Family Presents: (the long awaited) Mytho-Poetic Mixtape

What?

The Mytho-Poetic Mix-Tape is a collective art project currently in progress. Upon completion it will be a 24 track double CD accompanied by an illustrated pamphlet that will include the track-list, lyrics and an explanation of the project as well as details about the making of. Within the artwork of The Mix-Tape is a story-line that occurs over a period of eight seasons. Although it has been called a "coming of age story", it is more than the story of the changes that take place within one young man as he matures. The Mix-Tape chronicles the changes that take place not only in himself, but in everything around him - his friends, family, schools, country, planet, his reality. The Mix-Tape is a story of struggle and growth, of love and loss, of pain, of abandonment, of death - and experiences that may be far worse. The Mix-Tape is also a story of redemption, of beauty, of bliss and of birth. The Mix-Tape is a bitter sweet story of the inevitable losses that occur with the passage of time and the unimagined wonders that lie always in tomorrow's heart.

The Mytho-Poetic Mix-Tape is experimental and does not fall under any category of music or art that I have encountered. The inspiration for the music comes from countless styles and the artists who contribute range from Prog. Rock Post Hardcore bass guitar players to Folk Revivalist singers. Magic, war, sex, drugs, freedom and escape are explored in lyrics inspired by Hip-Hop, Folk, Emo, Spoken Word, Haiku and several styles of English language page poetry. The Mix-Tape is at once mysterious and recognizable, a distant yet familiar soil.
